2 Cor. 12:1-10,2 Cor. 4:7-9
Phil 2:12-13, Psalm 42:1-4, 2Cor. 12:6

Connect: Do you know someone who has struggled with a thorn, or have you struggled with a thorn in the flesh? What has that been like for you or for them? How can you become more grateful for the way God has created you considering both your strengths and weaknesses?

Engage:

Paul had many things to boast in, His pedigree, his education, his revelations, but he chose to boast in his sufferings. This was hard for the Corinthians – why do you think it was hard to hear about Paul’s sufferings?
Why do you think humility is forged in suffering rather than prospering?

Zach made 4 points about humility.

  1. Humility grows as we learn to trust God’s hand in our lives.

    a. What is the invitation for us in this statement?
    b. Is it hard to trust God’s hand in your life, why or why not?

  2. Humility grows as we learn to bring our weakness to God’s table

    a. Why is it hard to bring our weaknesses to God?
    b. Why is hard for us to be real about our weaknesses with each other?
    c. “In your weakness you are strong you will do something greater” – what do you think
    about this statement Zach made?
    d. Is God’s grace sufficient for you ___________( insert your name) What does that look like for you?

  3. Humility grows as we learn God’s grace.
    a. How do you think practically, this looks in real life today?
    b. How do you live in God’s grace?
    c. Can you honestly thank the Lord for the trials and weaknesses in your life? What would that look like for you if you cannot.

4. Humility ultimately grows as we learn to rest in God’s grace.
a. What would it look like for you to rest in God’s grace?
b. 2 Cor. 12:6 “Even if I should choose to boast, I would not be a fool, because I would be
speaking the truth. But I refrain so that no one would think more of me than is
warranted by what I do or say.” – What do you think about this verse?
c. Zach talked about Paul Bunyan being in jail, having a child that was blind, and trying to provide for his family. With that Paul Bunyan said he knew Christ deeper than ever? He was almost tempted to ask for harder so I can see God’s grace deeper. What do you think about Paul Bunyan’s thoughts?

Apply:  There was much in this sermon. This week go back and look at these passages –

1. What is one thing that you think God is inviting you to apply from this sermon?
“I do not have to be something that I am not yet” based on 2 Cor. 12:6. Can you experience God’s grace for where you are right now and how does that sit with you?

  1. Do you have some weaknesses that you feel called share with others and if you do, who are you going to share that with?

  2. Is there someone this week that is experiencing weakness that may need an encouraging word or visit for encouragement. Who is God calling you to encourage this week?
