Rain-In-The-Face
Pencil

1 Samuel 17:33

And Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him, for you are but a youth, and he has been a man of war from his youth.”

I came across a photograph of this Native American in a book of history of the American West. The image intrigued me, so I made this pencil drawing of it. Rain-in-the-Face was a feared and respected warrior from the Hunkpapa Lakoto (Sioux) who figured prominently at the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876. As a result, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was inpsired to write a poem entitled, “The Revenge of Rain-in-the-Face.”
