Are you more mystified by God’s wrath or God’s grace?

ENGAGE
Focusing on Chapters 1-3 in Hosea, discuss how Hosea displayed God’s relationship towards the Israelites and how Gomer displayed the Israelites relationship to God.

Read Hosea 11:1-11 and discuss this question: Is there anything surprising to you about God’s love towards the Israelites in this passage?

Read Isaiah 6:1-8 and discuss this question: As sinners, does God’s holiness keep us separated from God’s love, mercy, and forgiveness?

Discuss this statement by Dane Ortlund (Gentle and Lowly, page 68): ‘And just as we can hardly fathom the divine ferocity awaiting those out of Christ, it is equally true that we can hardly fathom the divine tenderness already resting now on those in Christ.”

APPLY
Discuss this statement by Martin Lloyd-Jones: “You will never make yourself feel that you are a sinner, because there is a mechanism in you as a result of sin that will always be defending you against every accusation. We are all on very good terms with ourselves, and we can always put up a good case for ourselves. Even if we try to make ourselves feel that we are sinners, we will never do it. There is only one way to know that we are sinners, and that is to have some dim, glimmering conceptions of God.”

In what practical ways can we see our sin more clearly through God’s eyes? What do you need to bring before Him to experience His deep, abiding love and forgiveness?

PRAY
Pray that we would become more like Christ day by day and walk in fellowship and forgiveness with Him.
