Connect: What are the memories of the story of Jonah in your life as a child?
Is there a memory in your life of God inviting you to do something and you went the other way?

Engage: Reread Jonah 1 again out loud. What is something you pick up that is new in this chapter.

What do you think about Zach’s idea of Jonah having knowledge of God but having his heart set against God? During this time God kept sending prophets and the Israelites were not hearing. How do we see that in present day?

What do you think of Jonah not wanting to go to Nineveh because he hated the Ninevites? Where do we see that into today’s culture?

Zach talks about carbon monoxide – how it is deadly it is, but we don’t know it. Zach talked about the sin of self-righteousness and how it manifests in superiority. Have you seen this in your life and how does it play out?

Zach shared 2 thoughts and 3 questions.
1. Sin is irrational – Where have you seen this in your own life?
2. Sin is exhausting – wears us out – Where have you seen this in your life?

A. How do we as a church awaken to reality? How do you awaken to reality? Do you have people that can speak truth to your life? Psalm 139:23-24, Jeremiah 17:9, Galatians 6:3

B. How is your storm impacting those around you?

C. How has your self -righteousness made you think that you deserve God’s mercy?

Apply:  What is one thing you are going to do considering this message? Where are you going take some time this week to sit with chapter 1 in Jonah?
